Take a break from Amazon and Walmart and check out my family's book store -- a VERY special place with countless books and other unusual treasures, including lots of baseball stuff. My grandfather started the business in 1925. It's called The Argosy, and it's the oldest independent book store in New York City. Wide Gorry walking in garden 17. Mid Gorry smoking Cuban cigar and talking with customers seated on hammocks in garden STORYLINE: An American expatriate opened Cuba's first English-language bookstore in Havana on Friday, working as a volunteer to circumvent the 53-year-old US embargo against the island. Cuba Libro is a play on "Cuba libre," the rum-cola drink that legend says was invented to celebrate the island's independence in 1900. The bookstore, which also has a cafe, is the brainchild of long-time U.S. expat Conner Gorry. The 43-year-old is a New York City native and journalist who has lived in Cuba since 2002. Gorry came up with the concept two years ago when a friend called to say she had a sack of books she didn't know what do with. "As I looked at this sack of books, which is about 35 books, this is about two years ago...I said: you know, Havana really needs an English language bookstore where people can come and exchange ideas and read in a healthy atmosphere," said Gorry. More donations have come in since to make up the 300-some volumes on sale for launch day. The United States has maintained the economic embargo against Cuba restricting travel and business concerns for most Americans. Gorry has seemingly covered all her bases by categorising herself as a "volunteer" at the bookstore. "I've had to tread extremely carefully, everything above board and legal because I'm an American. I'm a North American and beholden to US laws and so, I'm not in agreement with those laws, but I abide by them," said Gorry. Cuba Libro is filling a void when it comes to English-speaking reading material in the island. A recent tour of three government-run bookstores turned up scant offerings in English. Gorry hopes the bookstore will not only serve as a place for Anglophones on the island to find English books, but also thinks that it could help bridge relations between the US and Cuba. Gorry has been married to her Cuban husband for the past 10 years. Her litmus test is that it be good literature. This is a documentary film about American refugees in Cuba; the reasons for their 'escape' from the biggest democracy in the world to the clutches of Castro's communist regime. This educational film will explore their lives, careers, and challenges of living in one the last communist regimes in the world. It will also attempt to dispel many misconceptions that the typical Westerner has about Cuba’s society as told from a viewpoint of a Westerner living in Cuba. We have all heard of many Cuban immigrants and their descendants to the United States; their successful strife to make a better life for themselves and their families. Who could forget Desi Arnaz, Andy Garcia or Eva Mendes and many others who have enriched the American culture, sports, business, and politics? However while many of them fled the impoverished conditions of their homeland or because of political oppression (perceived of real) it was not a one-way affair! Some 3000 Americans fled the other way also for reasons of perceived or real political oppression. They were welcomed by Castro’s regime which gave them a sanctuary and a chance to re-build their lives. Some of them have become productive members of Cuban society, writers, radio personalities, social workers, or teachers. Even though their number is small, only about 3000, it is a significant one. Their voices and their lives are still a mystery to most Westerners, even now, in the age of Google and the ubiquitous internet very little is known about this small expat community. The Wikilerner team from Ireland is travelling to Cuba in January 2015 to record the extraordinary lives and stories of these people. We want to share their message and introduce Cuba to the world through their eyes.

Continuing my journey down the street in Holguin, Cuba, I passed a bookstore, pharmacy, fruit stand, and fire station. My last stop was the China-Cuba Friendship Society. It's no secret that China has emerged as one of Cuba's largest trading partners and allies. Inside the China-Cuba Friendship Society building, patrons practice yoga to the rhythm of relaxing music.
