Welcome to my first vlog (aka not me sitting just in front of the camera), and welcome to the beautiful city of Havana, Cuba! Trust me, we went to Cuba with no prior knowledge on how to survive there as tourists, but luckily, the locals were really friendly, the food was amazing and our hotel was located right in the middle of Old Havana! According to the locals, not only are we one of the few Filipinos who have been to Cuba, most of the Filipinos who go there are those who work as a seaman. So we were always mistaken for either Japanese or Chinese - any other form of Asian ethnicity aside from being Filipino. But we had an awesome amazing time in Cuba! How about Abner Doubleday's original marriage certificate or a handwritten letter from George Washington . . . or a book so big and heavy that I couldn't even open it? Take a break from Amazon and Walmart and check out my family's book store -- a VERY special place with countless books and other unusual treasures, including lots of baseball stuff. My grandfather started the business in 1925. It's called The Argosy, and it's the oldest independent book store in New York City. The store is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm, and in the colder months, it's also open on Saturday from 10am to 5pm. I might not be here (I've been busy lately with baseball and other work), but there's always plenty to see. www.argosybooks.com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama tried to draw attention to independently owned businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a day that is increasingly being marketed as one for deal-hungry consumers to remember to patronize these mom-and-pop outlets while doing their holiday shopping. He bought bags of books -- 17 titles in all -- during a stop at Politics and Prose, a popular Washington bookstore now owned by a former Washington Post reporter and his wife, also a former Post reporter who also worked for Hillary Rodham Clinton at the White House and State Department. In recent years, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has been advertised as "Small Business Saturday." Wide Gorry walking in garden 17. Mid Gorry smoking Cuban cigar and talking with customers seated on hammocks in garden STORYLINE: An American expatriate opened Cuba's first English-language bookstore in Havana on Friday, working as a volunteer to circumvent the 53-year-old US embargo against the island. Cuba Libro is a play on "Cuba libre," the rum-cola drink that legend says was invented to celebrate the island's independence in 1900. The bookstore, which also has a cafe, is the brainchild of long-time U.S. expat Conner Gorry. The 43-year-old is a New York City native and journalist who has lived in Cuba since 2002. Gorry came up with the concept two years ago when a friend called to say she had a sack of books she didn't know what do with. "As I looked at this sack of books, which is about 35 books, this is about two years ago...I said: you know, Havana really needs an English language bookstore where people can come and exchange ideas and read in a healthy atmosphere," said Gorry. More donations have come in since to make up the 300-some volumes on sale for launch day. The United States has maintained the economic embargo against Cuba restricting travel and business concerns for most Americans. Gorry has seemingly covered all her bases by categorising herself as a "volunteer" at the bookstore. "I've had to tread extremely carefully, everything above board and legal because I'm an American. I'm a North American and beholden to US laws and so, I'm not in agreement with those laws, but I abide by them," said Gorry. Cuba Libro is filling a void when it comes to English-speaking reading material in the island. A recent tour of three government-run bookstores turned up scant offerings in English. Gorry hopes the bookstore will not only serve as a place for Anglophones on the island to find English books, but also thinks that it could help bridge relations between the US and Cuba. Gorry has been married to her Cuban husband for the past 10 years. Her litmus test is that it be good literature. The only problem I think with Cuba is the money part because the tourists are only allowed to use the CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso), and you have to have enough of that to go around Cuba. Cuba can be expensive because 1 CUC is = 1 euro. Don't ever use your dollars to have it changed because they charge an extra 10%. On 26th November 2016, Fidel Castro, leader and inspiration of the Cuban revolutionary movement, people and nation, breathed his last. We send our heart-felt condolences to the government and people of Cuba, who are one in mourning his passing. It is a great loss not only to the people of Cuba, but to workers and the oppressed world-wide. But even as we lament his passing, we celebrate his life, work, teaching and legacy. He reminded us always, that through our own struggle against imperialism, despite all the capitalists' savagery and destruction, a better world is in birth. _______________________ To honour Comrade Fidel, we reproduce this short but powerful speech given by the Cuban ambassador to the UK, Comrade Teresita Vicente, just days before his sad parting. She quotes Fidel's words and teaching on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the Great Socialist October Revolution, at a CPGB-ML meeting held in Saklatvala Hall, Southall, west London on 5th November 2016. The meeting, and comrade Teresita's speech was reported in the Cuban media: http://misiones.minrex.gob.cu/es/articulo/celebrado-aniversario-99-de-la-gran-revolucion-socialista-de-octubre She opened her remarks by saying "Thank you, comrades, for your powerful opening message - with the short film of comrade Stalin addressing the troops [speaking to the Red army at the battle of Moscow on the 24th anniversary of the October Revolution in 1941]" “We all owe our freedom from fascism to the Soviet Union – not just in the Europe, but in the New World also!” She went on to discuss the direct impact that the October Revolution had on the founders of the Cuban communist party - such as Julio Antonio Mella - and to underscore the importance of the October Revolution for all working people, and therefore humanity as a whole, and drawing out the significance of the Communist International's role in developing the democratic, national liberation and communist movements in Latin America, and Cuba in particular. “The October Revolution changed the course of history and made it possible for small colonial countries like Cuba to defy imperialism. Without the Soviet Union, the Cuban revolution would not have been possible. The imperialists would have crushed the revolution without even the force of arms. The economic blockade failed because of the Soviet Union.” “Without the Soviet Union, there would have been no revolution in Cuba... We feel a deep and eternal gratitude to the Soviet Union” But after the demise of the once glorious USSR, due to the sabotage and wrecking of Khrushchevite revisionism, Cubans, says comrade Teresita, have no intention of giving up their hard-won socialist freedoms! “The Imperialists anticipated that Cuba could not survive the collapse of the Soviet Union, but Cuba is Socialist and so we shall remain!” "Because Cuban Socialism was built by the Cuban People themselves, after a hard fought and heroic struggle!" The meeting was chaired by Comrade Harpal Brar, and messages of solidarity were also delivered by Comrade Sayakane Sisouvong, LaosAmbassador to the UK, Comrade Kim Song Gi, Minister of the Korean Embassy, Comrade Marcus Garcia of the Venezuelan Embassy, and Comrade Dr Indunil Wijenaiaka, a prominent member of Sri-Lanka’s JVP. Comrade Gerry MacLochlainn, prominent Irish Republican soldier and politician, addressed the meeting in a personal capacity, focussing on the relationship between the October Revolution, the international workers’ liberation movement and the Easter Uprising of 1916, which was to herald the coming of an independent Ireland. Comrade Ranjeet spoke for the CPGB-ML, and the meeting closed with a rousing rendition of the internationale! Spanish/Nat Fidel Castro, Cuba's long-time President, launched a rare televised attack on the communist island's dissidents on Monday. He mocked and accused them of taking advantage of the upcoming Ibero-American summit to carry their "counter-revolutionary" message to foreign leaders. He named some of the dissidents during the broadcast. He said one, Elizardo Sanchez, had approached embassies about meeting with leaders of foreign powers during the summit for heads of state from Spain, Portugal and Latin America set to take place from November 15-16. "They were planning a parallel summit," Castro said angrily. The dissident Sanchez's phone was busy after the more than five-hour programme featuring Castro and three Cuban journalists who work for the government-controlled media. The dissidents have made no secret of their plans to use the gathering to draw attention to their complaints - which includes the communist government's preventing of freedom of expression, assembly and movement. They have grown bolder as the summit approaches, even gathering with foreign journalists in a restaurant during last week's visit to Cuba by George Ryan, the U-S Governor for Illinois. Normally Cuba's dissidents only meet reporters secretly. It was not immediately clear if Castro planned any action against the dissidents before the summit. Cuba's human rights record remains a shadow over the gathering, which Cuba hopes will help improve relations with Spanish and Portuguese-speaking nations. Some countries attending the summit, notably Spain, have pushed for freeing four internationally known Cuban dissidents, sentenced earlier this year to prison terms ranging from 4 and-a-half to six years. During the broadcast on Monday Castro discussed the four, reading portions of their documents calling on Miami exiles to encourage relatives still living in Cuba to carry out civil disobedience. "These are political prisoners?" he asked. During the televised appearance Castro focused much time on a highly publicised 40-day liquid fast by dissidents earlier this year. Castro offered extensive details about what the group ate daily, including milk with chocolate, chicken soup, yoghurt, ice cream, and fruit juice. He joked, "with all that, they should have gained weight." Castro also read detailed visitor lists and said 54 foreign journalists and five U-S Interests Section officials visited the group on the final day of its fast. The Cuban president said he had no problem with the correspondents, adding that "this isn't a war with the agencies." But he criticised American officials who visited, including Michael Kozak, the then U-S Interests Section mission chief. Castro also accused Interests Section officials of trying to block his meeting last week with Ryan, the first American governor to visit the island since the 1959 revolution. The president did not describe the alleged attempts to block the meeting. Ryan had a seven-hour meeting with Castro last week before returning to the United States. He repeatedly called for an end to the U-S trade embargo during his four-day stay. Telephones at the U-S Interests Section rang unanswered early today. Want to see a real estate document from the 14th century?

In recent years, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has been advertised as "Small Business Saturday." It's designed to drive foot traffic to independent businesses in between the frenzy of Black Friday sales at mass retailers and the Cyber Monday deals available online. Obama browsed the bookstore's racks with his daughters, Malia and Sasha. He held one shopper's baby and chatted with author David Baldacci. While paying at the cash register, another patron encouraged Obama to close the U.S. facility in Cuba where suspected terrorists are detained. "Hope you can close Guantanamo," the patron said. "We're working on it," Obama replied, then cheerily added to the crowd of shoppers: "Any other issues?" Obama also joked, "Hope it works," when he handed his credit card to the cashier. That appeared to be a reference to when a restaurant declined his card while he dined out in New York City in late September. Obama bought a mix of titles apparently chosen to satisfy readers young and old. The White House declined to reveal how much he paid. Among the books in the president's shopping bags for mature readers were "Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth and Faith in the New China" by New Yorker writer Evan Osnos, "Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End" by surgeon Atul Gawande and "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. For younger readers, Obama's purchases included three titles in the "Redwall" series by Brian Jacques, two titles in the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park and "A Barnyard Collection: Click, Clack, Moo and More" by Doreen Cronin. Obama and his daughters also shopped at Politics and Prose on the Saturday after Thanksgiving last year. Follow us on Twitter @Local12 and LIKE us on Facebook for updates!

As an American visiting Cuba on a person to person tour, my mission was to hit the road and interact with average Cubans. In this video, I walk past the library, appliance store, fire station, bookstore, pharmacy, and China-Cuban Friendship Society. Unfortunately, the library in Holguin, Cuba was closed when I walked by. Luckily, they had lots of books on display in the window. The books included all subject matter, including the Cuban Revolution. Hopefully, I'll get to visit the Holguin library on my next visit, if only to sit in one of the comfortable chairs. Just past the library in Holguin was an appliance store. At first, I looked through the windows, browsing at microwave ovens, hotpots, and enormous deep freeze coolers. I went inside, and the Cuban appliance store was filled with customers. The products were state of the art, although the prices were not what I would call competitive. Continuing my journey down the street in Holguin, Cuba, I passed a bookstore, pharmacy, fruit stand, and fire station. My last stop was the China-Cuba Friendship Society. It's no secret that China has emerged as one of Cuba's largest trading partners and allies. Inside the China-Cuba Friendship Society building, patrons practice yoga to the rhythm of relaxing music.
